Computing

Internet access will be available for conference participants in the computing labs (known as the Large and Small iMac labs) in the Richard Berry Building. Both telnet applications and Netscape/Internet Explorer will be available.

Registration Desk

A registration/help desk will be operating during the Welcome reception. For the rest of the conference a registration/help desk will be located opposite Theatre A on the ground floor of the Richard Berry Building and will be operating from 8 am until talks conclude each
day.

Social Events

The Welcome Reception is to be held at the Ian Potter Museum of Art (campus map ref.\ G13) on Sunday 7th July from 6:00 pm. The Conference Dinner is to be held at Matteo's restaurant, 533 Brunswick Street North Fitzroy, ('phone 9481 1177) onThursday, 11th July commencing at 6:30pm. A map isprovided in your satchels. It is approximately 1.8 km NE of the Richard Berry Building: walk east down Elgin St. (which becomes Johnston St.) and turn left into Brunswick St. Trams run along Brunswick Street: short trip tickets cost $1.70 (coins only) in the machines on board the trams. Leave about 30 minutes to make the journey if walking only. Taxis can be hired to make the trip: it should cost less than $10. Various scenic tours are available for participants and guests. Please see conference management at the registration desk for further information.

Banking

The Commonwealth Bank is on the ground floor of the Architecture Building (campus map ref. G10, 'phone 8344-7205) and the National Australia Bank is in the Old Botany Building (campus map ref G5, 'phone 131013). There are several ATMs on campus: in front of the Student Union Building; at the National Bank; at the Commonwealth Bank; at the Credit Co-op Building on Monash Road.

Post Office

There is a post office on campus in the Architecture building (near the Richard Berry building) --- see campus map ref. G10.

Emergencies

Ambulance, fire brigade, and police, telephone 000. Hospital Emergency Rooms: Royal Melbourne Hospital (Royal Parade, Parkville, 'phone 9342-7000); Royal Dental Hospital (Elizabeth St. and Flemington Rd., 'phone 9341-0222); Royal Women's Hospital (132 Grattan St., Carlton, 'phone 9344-2000).

Lunches and Restaurants

While morning and afternoon coffees and teas are provided by the conference, lunches are not provided. However, there are many options when choosing a place to eat.The student union on campus (campus map ref. F7, building 130) provides many inexpensive options for lunch including a good sushi bar. Attached to the Ian Potter museum is a cafe called Brunetti's that serves excellent coffee and light lunches. In nearby Lygon/Faraday streets there are a myriad of eating options. In Faraday street there is a large cafe called Thresherman's Bakehouse (221 Faraday) that is suitable for breakfast or lunch and further along the original Brunetti's (198 Faraday) provides the essential Australian/Italian coffee/pastry experience for breakfast or whenever. The University Cafe (257 Lygon), Tiamo (303 Lygon), Lygon Foodstore (263 Lygon) and Lygon Street Cafe (275 Lygon) are but four options in that street. The area is populated with Italian restaurants so pasta and pizza is easy to find! For dinner in Carlton Donnini's (312 Drummond street --- off Faraday) provides excellent pasta, Shakahari (201 Faraday) varied vegetarian fare, Toofey's (162 Elgin street --- parallel to Faraday) for excellent though a bit expensive seafood, and Vue de Monde at the corner of Faraday and Drummond (295 Drummond) is Carlton's best restaurant. A tram ride into the city will lead you to a wonderland of dining experiences. Melbourne's Chinatown centred around Little Bourke street has many choices. Some of Australia's best restaurants lie in the City. If you want to try one of these then maybe eat at Ondine, Flower Drum or Langtons.

Sports & Leisure

Conference delegates may use the sporting facilities of the Sports Union on payment of casual fees. These facilities include squash, badminton and tennis courts, volley ball, netball and basketball. A fully equipped weight room is also available, but you may have to provide evidence of competence or undergo training to access this room. The Sports Union is located about 100m NNW of the Richard Berry building.
Running: There is an excellent 400m running track immediately to the north of the Sports Union. Changing and showering facilities are opposite the SW corner of the track. The track may be used when University teams are not training there. Immediately to the north of the campus, almost opposite Queen's College lies Princes Park. There is a running track around Princes Park which is 3.182 km, and is marked in 500m intervals. The 1 mile post is also marked. From the Richard Berry Building to Princes Park is about 1 km.
Swimming: Unfortunately the University pool is closed indefinitely for repairs. Fitzroy Pool is an excellent 50 m outdoor heated (27 deg. C) pool, open all year round. Casual swimming costs $3.50, and includes spa and sauna should you be so inclined. It is located on Alexandra Parade, cnr. Turnbull St., which is one block east of Brunswick Street ('phone 9417-6493). Hours are 6am-8pm weekdays, 8am-6pm weekends. Its about 1.7 km from the Richard Berry Building. (There is also a much inferior pool at 248 Rathdowne St, Carlton. It is a shallow 25 m pool, but is about 700 m closer.)
Cycling: If you wish to hire a bicycle on a daily or weekly basis, you can contact Brunswick Street Cycles, 433 Brunswick St., Fitzroy ('phone 9416-1133). (This is one block south of Alexandra Parade, about 1.6 km from the Richard Berry Building.)

Travel Visas

    All travellers to Australia, other than Australian and New Zealand citizens, are legally required to hold a valid visa or an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) to travel to Australia. Please ask your travel agent or contact the nearest Australian Embassy/Consulate in your country.
      For event participants, the right visa is a Business or Short Stay visa, which allows tourism activities to be incorporated as part of the stay in Australia. Visas are available from Australian visa offices such as Australian Embassies, High Commissions and Consulates. They are also available, in ETA form, from travel agents and airlines in certain countries. ETA's are available to holders of the following passports approved for ETA: Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Brunei, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong SAR, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Malta, Monaco, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, AUK-British Citizen, UK-British National (overseas), USA and the Vatican.      The Australian Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs recommends that participants of international events held in Australia should apply for their visas well in advance of anticipated travel. This particularly applies to residents of non-ETA countries.
